At least, that’s all I knew!Įnter Dr Steve Salisbury. ![]() ![]() The team excavated the hillside, encapsulating the fossils in protective plaster jackets, and loaded its contents onto a container ship to Houston for its overland journey to SMU.Dinosaurs right?! I think everyone has a fascination with these ancient creatures, however many of us know nothing more than what has been portrayed in pop culture such as Jurassic Park, toys on the shelf in a department store, Dino-Riders (remember them?!) and whatever books we were shown as a kid. It turned into one of the expedition's biggest finds and forms the centerpiece of "Sea Monsters Unearthed": a large mosasaur with three partially digested mosasaurs in its belly. Inspecting a hillside in 2006, Polcyn noticed some vertebrae sticking out of a rock. Wind, rain and rivers eroded the exposed rocks, revealing the fossils inside. Waves pounded the newly surfaced rocks, undercutting them until the overhangs collapsed, leaving towering cliffs. Here along Angola's coast, the bulge lifted the ocean floor hundreds of feet out of the water. Starting about 45,000 years ago, heat flow within Earth's mantle caused the crust to bulge in a process called dynamic uplift. Over millions of years, these sediment layers turned to rock and the remains fossilized - but they were still underwater. Sediments covered dead animals that sank to the ocean floor. This figure shows how Angola's fossils were formed and exposed: 1. ![]()
